Praise must go to Ryan Reynolds (from the ABC sitcom Two Guys and a Girl) for making Van so much fun if he didn¿t possess just the right combination of cocky arrogance and genuine likability, the movie wouldn't work at all.

And, I must admit, it made me laugh, even when I felt vaguely ashamed for doing so. The film¿s humor moves fluidly from the fairly sophisticated to the lowest-of-the-low gross-out. He¿s never at a loss for a good line or witty move, whether romancing a pretty journalism student (Tara Reid) or one-upping his – you guessed it – snobbish, pre-med, frat-boy rival (Daniel Cosgrove). The proverbial ¿life of the party,¿ so beloved on campus that his parking privileges outweigh even those of the faculty, Van is a lot of fun to watch in action. National Lampoon¿s Van Wilder must be given a certain amount of credit for walking a fine line: On one hand, most viewers will want to hate Van for being a spoiled, immature jerk (which he is) on the other, it¿s hard not to root for him, because he¿s basically a decent, fun-loving guy. But invoking Ferris Bueller does give you an idea of this film¿s intent and tone (although this one is far more raunchy than the Hughes film ever dreamed of being). The differences between Ferris Bueller¿s Day Off and National Lampoon¿s Van Wilder – in every respect – can be measured in light-years, and the latter film wouldn't come out the winner. Both characters are as decent and well-meaning as they are completely intent upon breaking the rules and upsetting authority.ĭon¿t take that comparison to be qualitative, however. No, this isn¿t any kind of official sequel, but the resemblance between this film¿s title character – a privileged, sweet slacker (Ryan Reynolds) who's been in college for seven years on his dad¿s (Tim Matheson) dime – and the protagonist of the John Hughes high school classic (one of the few teen movies of the eighties that still holds up) are unmistakable. It is.If you¿ve ever wondered what a sequel to Ferris Bueller¿s Day Off, specifically a film detailing Ferris¿ adventures in college, might have been like, look no further than National Lampoon¿s Van Wilder for your answer. But that’s just window dressing, the rest is gratuitous nudity, semen gags, and big toothy grins as if it is all just a bit juvenile fun. She’s visiting to do a profile on this eternal student, to find, shock, he has no depth at all.

Having Tara Reid as a prim student journalist is a bizarre thought, defined as a makeweight dumb-blonde, here she’s the love interest who will shake Wilder out of his groove. This is a bland revisit that lacked the confidence to go out with the National Lampoon prefix in the USA. However, it becomes increasingly clear no matter how cock-sure and charming is Ryan Reynolds as the titular party liaison he has none of that film’s counter-culture bluster or the borderline insanity of John Belushi. Tim Matheson, one of the Delta-house’s former luminaries, even turns up as a stuffy father. As in the beloved frathouse mania of Animal House. But, amazingly, this avoids one-star ignominy thanks to some genuine chuckles.Īn inoffensive if rather pointless attempt by the National Lampoon team to revisit former glories.

“Eureka! A bunch of guys eating eclairs… filled with bulldog jizz!”Īnd so the relentlessly moronic, derivative and offensive Van Wilder: Party Liaison was born. #2: “Yeah, but how do we push the boundaries of taste?” #1: “What the world needs now is another gross-out comedy.”Įxec.
